Choose a Reliable Portable Power Station
To avoid fire hazards, the most important thing is to choose a reliable portable power station.
When assessing reliability, check for certifications that objectively evaluate the safety of the power station. In Japan, the PSE mark is important, while internationally, certifications like CE and FCC are key. Having these certifications doesn't guarantee absolute safety, but they show that the manufacturer has considered safety and compliance standards.
While online reviews are also important, portable power stations can experience sudden failures even if they work fine initially. Be sure to check for "long-term usage reviews" to see if any issues arise over time.
If users report problems like "battery voltage drop" or "certain functions stopped working" after prolonged use, this could indicate problems with the BMS (Battery Management System) or internal circuits, which may increase the risk of a fire.
Pay Attention to the Usage Environment
No matter how reliable the portable power station is, using it in a poor environment increases the risk of fire.
The batteries in portable power stations tend to heat up during charging and discharging, so ensure good ventilation. Avoid using them in confined spaces or in hot and humid environments.
Avoiding direct sunlight is also crucial for preventing overheating. Storing or using the power station in high-temperature conditions can lead to battery degradation and overheating, which may result in a fire hazard.
Proper Charging Management
Overcharging is one of the main causes of fire in portable power stations. To avoid overcharging, always follow the manufacturer's recommended charging time and use the original AC adapter provided by the manufacturer. Also, avoid leaving the device charging for long periods unattended.
Since the fire risk is highest during charging, it’s best to be present when charging, if possible. If charging seems too fast or too slow, stop the process as this may indicate internal issues.
Prevent Battery Degradation
When not using the portable power station for an extended period, store it in a cool, dry place with the battery charged to about 50%. This helps prevent battery degradation.
Even if you don't use the power station for a while, it's recommended to charge it every few months to maintain the battery’s health and avoid degradation.
